Startup Leadership program - Entrepreneurship education

Recently while doing some research on entrepreneurship education, I stumbled upon a program for startup CEOs.

Startup Leadership Program, so it is called. The program's approach is highly practical. It teaches some of the most important lessons that any startup CEO would need while running his/her business. These include raising capital, financial models, business ideas, leadership, negotiations, scaling up businesses etc.

The program currently has 12 chapters globally include four in India (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad). Its a 6 months 60 hours course delivered over weekends or weekday evenings. It costs Rs 4500/- (India) in program fees.

I spoke to an SLP fellow to get an insider perspective. The key take away from the discussion was that SLP looks at you rather than your idea/business. Absolute dedication and commitment to the program is also an important criteria for selection.

You can checkout the program details at Startup Leadership Program

Facebook ads vs Google Adwords

Anyone who has ever done business online is aware of Google Adwords, the Pay per click (PPC) ads that allow advertisers to bid on search keywords and send highly targeted traffic to their offer page/website.

In the past few months, Facebook has really picked up in terms of user base. With over 500 million users, its a community that no advertiser can ignore. So which advertising platform is better?

Blackberry torch vs apple iPhone 4

I currently have a Nokia E90 communicator which works pretty good. Except for the body (case) problem that need replacement, there hasn't been any problem in this phone for over 4 years now. But its old. I also own a Blackberry 8320 Curve that I use mainly for BBM. The smartphone world has moved on. I wanted to buy a new smart phone and thinking hard between a Blackberry torch vs apple iPhone. Android phone are good but somehow I am skeptical about the services of the phone manufacturers. I prefer Hardware+Software coming out of a single vendor.

Two people in my family recently purchased a Blackberry torch and apple iPhone 4, so I had the opportunity to spend good time with these two phones. Here's my verdict.

Upgrade to Mac OS X Lion worth it?

Apple recently launched the major update version for its Mac OS X operating system called Lion. While there was a lot of debate and discussion about how much this new OS version will be priced, Apple chose to sell it for $29.95 (same price as previous version Snow Leopard). But the question remains, is Mac OS X Lion worth upgrading to?

India's UID service uses unlicensed windows copy

Recently, I was at the UID enrollment centre setup near my residence to enroll myself to get a UID card. For those who aren't aware, UID (Unique Identification card) is India's national ID card which will be required in future to avail all government services. It is also known as Aadhar card and is issued by the The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

The entire process of enrollment went pretty smooth. They take your picture, scan all 10 fingers and also do an Iris scan. An acknowledgement receipt is generated and given to the person enrolled. The whole process does not take more than 10 minutes.

What surprised me, however, was that the computer used for collecting all this information was running an unlicensed copy of windows. While its a different debate whether Windows OS was really required in the project, but having chosen Windows as the platform for collection of UID data, the government should spend some more money and procured licensed copies of the software.

How many Government institutions and corporate houses in India still use illegal softwares? There is more awareness about using genuine software today than it was 5 years back but given what I just saw today, India has a long way to go until we can truly call ourselves the super power of IT.

Bing copies Google search results

Google has accused Bing of copying its search results through an investigative operation called 'Bing Sting'.

Google engineers created fake search results for nonsensical terms. Few weeks later, these results started appearing on Bing.

Interestingly Bing doesn't deny this. It says that their algorithm looks at more than 1000 signals to determine the search results. This includes analyzing the click-stream of its IE toolbar users on what they search and click on Google.

iPad launch in India

Apple officially launched iPad in India last week on Jan 28th 2011. The pricing is pretty competitive with the WiFi model ranging from Rs 27,900 to Rs 37,900 while the WiFi+3G model is available in the price range Rs 34,900 to Rs 44,900.

If you already own an iPad, this is still an excellent news. Now your iPad can be serviced in India. You can also extend your iPad warranty in India. Not to mention, the accessories are now officially available as well.

Payoneer suspends services in India

Payoneer announced yesterday that they are temporarily suspending POS (point of sale) transactions in India. Probably the ATM transactions will be suspended pretty soon.

The move comes after the Indian regulators (viz RBI) objected to the use of these cards in India.

Payoneer offers prepaid Mastercard that can be used to withdraw money at ATMs or used in the shops (POS) throughout the world. These cards also work online. It is a popular method of remitting money from various freelancing websites like Elance, Odesk, Scriptlance.com etc.

Consulting gigs to bootstrap your startup ?

Consulting services can be a good way to make some cash. But is it really a good way to bootstrap your startup? I would say the answer to that question is not a simple yes or no.

I come from a tech background and will speak about tech startups in general.

In theory the idea looks excellent. You have a great product idea. You need money to get that idea to the market. You do consulting to generate some cash that pays for the development and other expenses. I wish it was that simple in practice.

Freelancer.com acquires LimeExchange.com

Recently LimeExchange.com announced that it was shutting down operations. I wondered why until I came across a US Federal court ruling giving permanent injunction against LimeWire. The ruling effectively means that LimeWire will shut down its operations and probably be liable for monetary damages.

How I scored 700 on GMAT

Couple of months back, the G-bug caught me. MBA has never really been my dream until very recently when I successfully sold off my first venture. At this point, I had three options

1.	Take some time off
2.	Start another venture/business
3.	Go back to school and learn new skills.

After much deliberation and discussion, I chose option 3.

Nokia battery overheating and exploding

I tuned into the evening news today and saw a report about Nokia BL-5C battery overheating and exploding problem. Well it does sound scary and although Nokia says only 46 million out of about 300 million BL-5C batteries manufactured may have this problem, its still a sizable number. What should you do, if you own a Nokia phone?
